Lead hairstylist for John Masters Organics, Paul Hanlon, collaborated with designer Phillip Lim to create a late-50’s, early-60’s inspired ponytail to complement the 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring/Summer 2017 Collection. This deconstructed ponytail highlights hair’s natural texture, making each look as unique as the woman wearing it.

“We started looking at 1960’s American Photographers, Danny Lyon’s book, ‘The Bikeriders’ was a big inspiration. We also looked at college girls’ hair in the ’60’s when they attended their end of year prom. The hair has an element of youth, but at the same time, sophistication and elegance. It’s a transition of a girl to a woman - hence the texture feeling slightly more deconstructed, to make it feel more modern.” – Paul Hanlon

Of the collection, designer Phillip Lim shared, “It’s my reaction to the current mood in culture… Somehow playful austerity seems to be a new sensuality.” Here’s a step-by-step guide to recreate the look:

Step 1: Prep hair for styling with the Green Tea & Calendula Leave-in Conditioning Mist and Volumizing Foam.

Step 2: Power dry hair by hand, without using a blow dryer. For straighter hair, twist sections while drying to give the hair some movement. When dry, if more movement is needed use a wide curling wand add more of a wave. o ignored

Step 3: Add 100% Argan Oil to the ends of hair.

Step 4: Spray the Sea Mist Salt Spray with Lavender very lightly over the surface of the hair to deconstruct the waves.

Step 5: Style hair into an extreme, low side part above the ear, almost so it looks like a comb over.

Step 6: Lightly backcomb the roots, and with your hands pull into a low ponytail, leaving the hair to fall over the face, giving it a swept ’60’s feel. Use an elastic band to hold the pony, and with your fingers pull some hair out from the front so the look is not too clean.

Step 7: Using a wide curling wand, at the ends of the ponytail split the hair into 3 sections and curl the end-mid length to create the feeling that the ponytail was once in a roller .

Step 8: Finish with a light mist of the Hair Spray to hold.
