Summer Rayne Oakes.

Summer Rayne Oakes' Bug Life
What does your occupation mean?
Basically I work with brands that are interested in being more environmentally- and socially-conscious both as a spokesperson and as an advisor. It's like a two-for-one deal! I've done a number of collaborations recently.
Is Summer Rayne Oakes your born given name?
Yes. My brother's name is "Travis Shayne." My first name is "Summer Rayne." My mom was a creative. She had an overwhelming feeling that I was going to be an artist when I grew up so wanted to name me something artsy. Plus she was aiming to have her children on the first day of summer...worked for my brother. I was born a couple weeks shy but it was downpouring when I was born.
How many bugs do you currently have living in your room?
One can never tell. They like to burrow and be a part of their surrounding environment. I would say 4 or 5 is all I have left. I try not to breed them because you either have 4 or 400, so I spend time in the beginning sexing them (that means separating out the sexes).
Where do you get them?
UPS delivers ANYTHING. I like their slogan, "What can brown do for you?" Deliver insects? Check! I'll get another delivery in the spring <smiling>.
What is your favorite kind of bug?
Favorite arthropod hands down: Black African Millipede.
What made you want to join the cause to save our environment? Was there a specific incident?
I was a kid who wouldn't come in from the outdoors. I rebelled by bringing the outdoors into my room so I could study it even when I had to be behind walls. It wasn't a particular incident; it was the fact that I always knew what I loved: It was nature - to be quite simple. It's the one thing that truly makes me come alive.
My passion has always been bridging different groups of people together and bringing important, personal issues - particularly those on the environment - out to a wider audience. At college, I wanted to figure out how to tie my environmental studies into mainstream culture. I figured fashion was at such opposite ends - that if I were able to connect those two industries - I'd make a greater difference than by being an environmental scientist. I started with The Organic Portraits Project (organicportraits.com), values-based modeling, then ECOFASHION 101 (www.ecofashion101.com), Behind the Label (www.behindthelabel.net) - and then the rest just grew from there. It's been a journey!
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?
Don Quixote - I'd rather people think of me crazy and fulfilled about my craft then sane and broken.
What kind of make-up do you use? Is it mainly organic?
I like Tarte; bOm or Pangea lip balm; Duchess Marden lotions and decollete serum; Jurlique rose mist spray. I pretty much keep it simple.
What is your biggest beauty secret?
Sunscreen! Oh - and I've never dyed my hair and don't drink coffee. I think all of that helps.
If you could invite five dinner guests, dead or alive, who would they be?
Martin Heidegger, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Richard Branson, Maya Deren, Martin Luther King, Jr. I'd make sure Albert (Einstein) would come for dessert at least. I think that is a good collection of dreamers, thinkers and doers.
What is your staple item?
Earthlust thermos
What is your guilty pleasure?
Travel. Down-time.
What makes you smile?
Genuine laughs, real hugs, running barefoot in the grass, letting go...
Who would you rate the sexiest man on the planet?
Oh man, I'd be lying if I told you it was a celebrity or a musician or someone like that. Truth is I met this Philosopher who is...how shall I say this? ... quite delectable. I don't think he knows it.
Who would you rate the sexiest woman on the planet?
Beth Ditto (is that odd?) I like that she knows who she is and unapologetically comfortable. She's sexy in a non-traditional way. It's self-evident.
I have extremely flexible lips. I published scientific papers on sewage sludge. I collected fungus, bouncy balls, and bird feathers as a child. That's enough oddities for the day.
"The world doesn't say 'No' unless you let it."
