Samantha Pleet's Brooklyn

Brooklyn based designer Samantha Pleet debuted her first collection in 2006, and has been making a name for herself ever since.
Her designs can be described as playful, flirty, hip(ster), and modern with a vintage twist. These are the kind of clothes to cause trouble in, adventure in, and give all those flannel clad boys something to drool over. She dresses Brooklyn indie bands Au Revoir Simone, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Chairlift, and Apache Beat. She’s cool. She’s talented. She’s Brooklyn.
Where did you grow up?
Just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania surrounded by forests
What is the difference between your hometown and Brooklyn?
Philadelphia was a great city to grow up in, but there is so much more here and not much opportunity there for designers.
What made you decide to live in Brooklyn?
Like most people who come to New York I wanted to live in Manhattan, but I went to School at Pratt and after a year I fell in love with Brooklyn.
What is your favorite spot in Brooklyn to escape to? (Coffee shop, bookstore, garden, museum, can be anything!)
Getting an old fashion cocktail at Hotel Del Mano takes you to another world.
What is your favorite music venue in Brooklyn?
McCarren Park pool used to be amazing, but that closed down but Glasslands is an awesome place to go.
What are your favorite Brooklyn neighborhoods?
Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Fort Green, Red Hook and Carol Gardens
What does a perfect Brooklyn day consist of for you?
Waking up and getting cafe at Oslo with my husband Patrick, getting brunch at Enids , then going shopping for vintage at Malin Landaeus and Horizons, and new designer clothes Charlie and Sam and Bird, and buying new records at Sound Fix and used records at Academy. After that we will head over to the Fort Green Flee Market and a stop into the Dossier Store and Stuart and Wright. Then we'll go over to court street in Carol Gardens to have dinner at Frankie's 457 and then maybe go see a film at BAM or show at the Bellhouse in Gowanus.
How much has living in Brooklyn influenced your work? How has it influenced your work?
I am lucky to live among many musicians, artists, photographers, and designers to be inspired by and collaborate with.
Is there something unique about the people in Brooklyn that you love and consider difficult to find elsewhere?
It’s a very diverse community where people are very ambitious but come together in a small town way.
In four words, what has Brooklyn offered that no other place you’ve lived has?
Good Food and People!
What sights and sounds make up Samantha Pleet’s Brooklyn?
I see a lot of Construction sights, the Manhattan skyline and the Williamsburg Bridge. I hear lots of construction, new music, and creative voices all around me.
